Why A Juice Cleanse Probably Isn't For You

While a juice cleanse can be delicious and nutritious, going solid-food free might be too hard on your system.

Juice cleanses and fasts have become trendy and are often touted by celebrities as miracle workers. And while they can be helpful for enhancing our health, the stresses of the usual 9-5 job, inadequate sleep routines, fun social outings, or any other realistic part of life mean that these cleanses could do more damage to your health than good. 

But why?
Cleanses require a lot of energy and willpower to detoxify your body. If you are not 100 per cent physically and mentally relaxed during an intense cleanse, you will simply increase the stress load and sequential damage to your body. 

This is why it is extremely important to take a step out of your busy lifestyle during a cleanse. This could range from taking a few days off of work, booking a tropical vacation or signing up for a health retreat. 

But what if you don’t have the time or funds for any of this? 
Not to worry…
There are many ways in which you can help your body’s detoxification process every single day during your regular schedule and I am here to tell you about them. 

Lets take a look at seven simple steps to a detoxed body…

1. Don’t eat past 9pm
Your body’s detoxification system is at its peak performance between 11pm and 3am and requires a tremendous amount of energy and enzymes. When you eat late at night, these resources are stolen from the liver’s detoxification system and handed over to the digestive system, resulting in a lower detoxification capacity. If you are hungry, go for a smoothie, soup or anything that is super easy to digest.

2.    Get your sweat on
The skin eliminates more toxins than any other organ in the body. Take advantage of this fact and aim to sweat at least three to four times per week. Choose your favourite ways to sweat, such as an awesome fitness class, spontaneous dance parties or 20 minutes in the sauna. 

3. Breathe slow and deep
Deep belly breathing is a great way to help the lungs expel toxins. It can be done anywhere, anytime and however often you want. Here is how it all goes down:
With a straight back, take a slow, deep breath into the abdomen until you look seven months pregnant. Hold the breath for two seconds and release. Try for 10 belly breaths in a row. 

 4. Hydrate, pee clear and repeat…
Its simple: the more you drink, the more you pee, the more your kidneys flush toxins from your circulation into your pee, the more you detox. To help this process, sip on filtered water or herbal teas throughout the day and simmer down on the caffeinated beverages and chocolate. 

5. Avoid constipation at all costs
Constipation leads to a process of autointoxication, where toxins are reabsorbed from the colon into the bloodstream. Basically, this means that all the hard work that your body did to get rid of those toxins went to waste. Aim for one to three solid and smooth bowel movements per day. If you aren’t meeting this target, try increasing your intake of probiotic and fibre-rich foods.

6. Shed the extra pounds
Most toxins are fat soluble and stored in your fat cells. However, when you burn fat for energy, these toxins are released to the liver and eliminated from the body through the lungs, skin, bowel and kidneys. Cutting down on sugar and carbohydrates and exercising for more than 20 minutes everyday are two effective ways to get your body into fat burning mode. 

7. Peace, love and laughter
Stress and emotional trauma not only deplete nutrients that are required for proper detoxification but also increase emotional toxins within the body. For this reason, stress management techniques should be a part of your everyday routine. Some examples include yoga and meditation, positive affirmations in the mirror, gratitude journaling and leaving at least an hour of every day for yourself. 

Follow these tips and you will see life-changing results in the way you look, feel and perform. Even if you implement one at a time, it is important that you start TODAY and not leave your health on the back burner. The juice cleanse can wait, but your health cannot.
