Birks Are Back

Birks Are Back

The infamous Granola trademark is back. Birkenstocks hit the market as a comfortable and hippie friendly sandal in the US in 1967. Since then, there have been many surges of popularity. For a short period, the largest consumers tended to be (excuse my generalization) sock wearing, dreadlocked and indian cotton sporting individuals. However, through the trendiest points in Birkenstock history, these sandals have been revered as a comfy flip flop alternative to any and all of the fashion community. Since 2013, Birkenstock has enjoyed a rush of popularity. Our youngest generation of fashion forward teens as well as the biggest celebrities and chicest divas have embraced the trend.

In 2004, Heidi Klum released her own line of Birkenstocks and continues to influence modern style with her amazing Birkenstock fashion combos. Since 2004, celebrities like Naomi Watts, Drew Barrymore, Anne Hathaway, Selma Blaire, Uma Thurman and Kiera Knightly have been spotted rocking Birks, and rocking them well. Rather than running away from this potentially hazardous fashion trend, join in. Open your closet, reach far into the back and pull out the Birkenstocks haven’t seen since your Euro trip circa 2006. Better yet, check out some of the amazing new styles hitting the shelves this summer. Just make sure that when you bust them out in public, you do not commit one of the major Birkenstock faux pas.

Socks and Sandals

It wasn't cool then and it isn’t cool now. The socks and sandals trends commonly seen on old men and exuberant hippies isn’t the best look. If your feet are cold, please opt for shoes. Sandals are intended for bare feet not wool covered feet that haven’t seen the sun in a decade.

Flared Jeans

Flared jeans are not a bad thing. In fact they can be massively flattering and are slowly creeping their way back into our skinny jeans obsessed world. That being said, the combo of Birkenstocks and overly flared jeans can too strongly mimic the look of a Woodstock attendee.

Indian Cotton

Just as flared jeans can cause your style to veer a little to far into 1967, indian cotton paired with the wrong variety of boho inspired fashion can have you looking like you rolled out of a smoky apartment rather than your neat and tidy soho apartment.

Shin Length Dresses

Shin length loose dresses don’t do a lot to help lengthen your legs and adding wide shoes doesn’t help. While Birkenstocks can look clean and sophisticated on just about anyone, try wearing them with knee or above the knee dresses, shorts or a cute pair of skinny jeans.

Brag About Being the Original

No body particularly cares that your Birks are from 3 generations ago. There is no denying that Birkenstocks are incredibly durable and can survive through just about anything. However, by wearing them well you are making a fashion statement that doesn’t require any additional bragging. Plus, some of Birkenstock’s newest styles have a flare that can’t be surpassed by your precious artifacts.
