Clean Up Your Beauty Routine With The Green Beauty Rules
Paige Padgett is a Hollywood makeup artist who doesn't use big brand name or designer beauty products. Known for making Jillian Michaels even more beautiful, Padgett has also beautified the famous faces of Chloe Sevigny, Anna Kournikova, Cheryl Tiegs, Andy Samberg and Keanu Reeves (swoon!), all without fancy packaging or harmful chemicals.
Do fancy packaging and big brand names mean toxic products? Unfortunately, they often do. And while natural beauty products have come a long way, there's still a misconception that these products aren't as effective or beautiful as traditional cosmetic lines. Luckily, Padgett is here to change that. It's her mission to show people that green can be glamorous. Her book, The Green Beauty Rules, outlines a step-by-step process for greening and cleaning your makeup bag, including how to read product labels and ingredient lists and which beauty buzzwords are misleading. She talks about reducing your cosmetic footprint (a phrase and idea we love) and tells you which products to toss and which ones to try. You can also view a list of her favourite products on her website, a good quick guide to safe beauty.
What we love about The Green Beauty Rules
There is nothing pretentious or condescending about this book. Padgett outlines how difficult it was for her to discover the dangers of traditional beauty products and to figure out which ones were safe and which of those actually worked. And she admits that she's not militant about choosing products, either. She doesn't use only organic products—and there are lots of reasons for that, including that some ingredients just don't need to be. She just chooses the best, safest products she can find with the lowest cosmetic footprint.
The writing is easy to read and totally straightforward, like talking to a good friend or trusted beauty advisor, like that hair stylist you've been seeing for years.
Why greening and cleaning your beauty routine is important
We were thrilled to be sent a copy of The Green Beauty Rules because we are totally on the same page as Padgett when it comes to treating our skin and bodies with respect. As she notes in the introduction to her book, "Skin absorbs cosmetic products like food; chemicals are absorbed through your pores into your body. This is why chemicals are so effective in prescription and over-the-counter medicines." And Padgett explains the dangers of these chemicals in the book. "When you learn how toxic chemicals react in your body, you will want to buy clean, nontoxic cosmetics. Buying premium brands won't matter as much to you as making healthier choices," she says.
